There are rescue kennels and pounds all over the world, full of dogs and cats needing a good home. Christmas is a popular time for giving a furry friend a home. The tragedy is that so few mature animals are given a second chance at life. Puppies and kittens are always in with a better chance, probably because of the 'cute' factor.

Having given a home to a handful of adult cats and dogs, I can honestly recommend adopting a grown up rather than a puppy or kitten. Our present dog is ten years old and we took him in when he was seven; tired, hungry, flea bitten and nervous. He has blossomed into a magnificent animal and draws comment wherever he goes. He is the joy of our lives; always ready to play, good with children, loyal and well behaved. What more could you ask for?

There are distinct advantages in not introducing a kitten or puppy into your home. Certainly if you are prepared to take in a new animal then you are ready to invest some time in training and care, but younger animals need house training, lead training, general obedience training, not to mention the costs of vaccination, spaying or neutering, and constant vigilance to make sure they are not chewing up Grandad's slippers or teething on the legs of the grand piano. Older pets have usually been house trained and vaccinated beforehand.

The only disadvantage in taking in an older pet is that their 'shelf life' is shorter. You will not have so many years with them as they have already lived half their lives and sometimes in less then healthy circumstances. However, the love and gratitude you will receive from these furry companions far outweighs any drawbacks.

Etiquette for Cubicle Land - 10 Tips for a Happier Office Environment

What Not To Do in Your Cubicle!

1. Do place pictures of your family, relatives and friends on your desk but limit it to about 4 or 5 pictures maximum. You are not in jail. You will likely see some of these people when you go home. A collage of photos on your desk not only makes you look like a daydreamer, but it is very cluttered and a bit inconsiderate. Keep it simple and everyone will be happy. Also, no photos of nude men/women or anything that is offensive to other colleagues such as vulgar pictures or calendars. Not only is it rude, but you’ll likely have your HR department speaking to you very soon!
2. It is never okay during office hours to use your speaker phone! This is loud, distracting and just plain rude! Unless your cubicle has a door and a roof, I don’t recommend this. Use a headset if you would like to be hands-free from the phone while on a conference call or taking notes on a call. This not only is quiet but it is great for keeping noise out while your are not on the phone and simply just typing or working on a presentation etc.
3. Do not make personal phone calls to family and friends that involve arguing, raising your voice or offering personal details. This is an office, not your living room! You not only look like a fool, but you embarrass yourself and others with this behavior. If you’re really lucky you might even have rumors spread around the office about you.
4. Don’t send jokes or other junk email at work to your friends or cubicle neighbors. Colleagues are at work to make money and get their job done, not read your endless jokes. Never mind being irritating, if your email gets in the wrong hands you will be perceived as a lazy worker and depending on the content of the email, could even be fired!
5. Never barge into a colleagues’ cubicle! Treat their space as if it was an office with a door. You would need to knock to come in whether the door was opened or closed so a cubicle should be no different. Knock on the desk or gently let the person know you are there. If they are on the phone, it is a no-brainer, don’t interrupt! I can count the times that people used to come and sit on my desk just to chat. Treat everyone’s space with respect even though you share the same office space.
6. As a basic rule, keep your voice down. If you are on the phone, great, but remember so is everyone else. Especially if you are just chatting on your lunch hour with a colleague be cognoscente of the fact that other people are still working and their schedule is different than yours.
7. Don’t play music at your desk during working hours. This should seem like an obvious point but I’m surprised at how many people do it! With all the music we can download from online services and our own CD’s and of course the radio, many still like to feel as if they are in the comfort of their own home. If you have to listen to music, use a headset! Remember just because you enjoy what you are listening to doesn’t mean the people around you do. So, loud or not-use your ear phones.
8. Depending on your job role you might be given a cell phone, remember to keep the ringer on low or use the vibrate function. A common complaint in the offices I have worked in is that so-and-so’s phone rings so loud and is distracting. It is always best to use the vibrate setting.
9. Again, you need to remember you are not in your living room. Taking off your shoes and roaming the office in your socks, or worse- barefoot is unacceptable office behavior. Not only can it look unprofessional but it can often scare your cube-mates off with the offensive scent. And if you’ve ever thought about it-keep your pink fuzzy slippers at home where they belong!
10. NO belching, farting, nose picking or flossing your teeth at your desk. Believe it or not, people actually do this! I once went over to a colleagues’ desk and was completely disgusted to find him flossing his teeth! Sadly the washroom was about 6 feet away and he didn’t see what the problem was. I also encountered a colleague who sat next to me and was caught picking his nose while his friend on the other side caught him and watched for 5 minutes until she burst out laughing. This may sound funny but it is not office etiquette. The same holds true for farting and belching. Nobody wants to hear this outside of work so why do they want to listen to and smell you? Remember where you are and use the washroom if need be for such bodily functions.

The Neighbor From Hell

I have enjoyed living in Spain for over ten years now and have been at my current address for eight of them.

Until about eighteen months ago, my immediate, upstairs neighbors were an old couple. He was never in the best of health but always had time to chat but she was an unknown quantity. Following his death, eighteen months ago, I didn't hear much from her but over the last nine months she has become the NEIGHBOR FROM HELL.

Her apartment is exactly the same size and design as mine but whereas I find that most of my time is spent in one place while I do something (read a book, answer emails &c) she manages to spend hours simply marching up and down while wearing what appear to be wooden clogs.

I cannot remember the last time I had a nights' sleep because this little old lady can walk for twenty hours a day. After midnight she has developed a time table. On the hour she will clump her way to the bathroom, from there she will go to the kitchen and then to her bedroom. At 2am or 3am she will flood her two plant pots on her balcony so that water crashes down on all the balconies below. Since my downstairs neighbors have a plastic cupboard on their balcony, the cacophony of noise is magnified, not only by the silence at that time of the morning but by the drum like sound of water hitting plastic.

Several times I have spoken to this woman about her noise but her only reaction is to whine like some small child that she lives alone - as if that means she is silent! As I type this, at 11am she is upstairs playing one of her favourite games - sliding a 33kilo gas bottle around the floor.

I know that the noise she makes is deliberate because every time I have tried to get her to be quiet, she comes to her door wearing slippers.

My health has never been good but the last two week-ends have seen me have to go for emergency treatment at the hospital.

This morning I returned my wife to the airport after a two week visit. In the whole of that time - she never had one night of sleep.

It is so sad that one evil and malignant woman can cause so much distress in a land that is an absolute joy to live in.

They simply lived a poor quality sloppy lifestyle and their actions in the store reflected their outlook on the living experience.

Why would people choose to live this way? Because this feels normal to them. It is the way they grew up and were taught to live. It is the extension of how their parents or the other adults in their past had set an example. It was the reflection of their personal comfort zone and the effort level that they felt most comfortable with.

They had become mindless creatures following a set of living patterns handed down to them. They weren't uncomfortable and trying to improve because low quality living and no effort was normal for them.

Oh, if you listen closely between cigarettes, sips of beer or telephone calls you will hear them grumble about how life is unfair and they have been given the short end of the stick every time. Luck just doesn't seem to be on their side and they beg and borrow their way into the lives of those who do apply quality living thoughts and concepts.

The fact that an automobile wears out and disintegrates over time if it is not maintained simply seems to elude their way of thinking. The concept of putting things back where you got them from in a store is cause for far more effort than they are willing to provide. So they toss the item wherever they want and wander up the aisle looking for the next product to fondle and relocate.

When the vehicle ceases to function, bills don't get paid and sickness sets in they look to the sky and wonder " why me ".

If you recognize these traits in yourself and are reading this it is because you choose for it to be you. Certainly your family may have instilled the original seed of poor quality within you, but you are able to immediately change that with one decision and the results that instantly follow.

Your life and living experience simply doesn't have to be any preset pattern. You can choose to get up right now and change yourself, evolve into an entirely new person with a new lifestyle and end result toward fulfillment.

You are who you allow and accept yourself to be.

I have been telling people that for more than thirty years now as have others and yet more and more people are falling into the static patterns of a dull mindless lifestyle filled with routine patterns and poor quality.

Save this and read it again over and over if you need to. Go to your local library and read books on personal development or study my programs of human excellence technologies, but do something and do it right now!

Observe someone who lives with quality. Notice how they dress, act and live. Identify the weakness in your style that is keeping you from attaining their quality of living experience.

The Terry Scuff, Ice Blue, Medium slippers were a present for my wife. They arrived quickly, in plenty of time for Christmas, and she loves them. The open toes avoid pressing on her feet and they are very comfortable.

The movie 27 Dresses starring Katherine Heigl tells the story of a woman who has difficulty saying no; consequently, she has been a bridesmaid on 27 different occasions, but never a bride. She has accumulated a closet full of bright, colorful bridesmaid dresses, which she just can't seem to throw away.

Though it is unlikely that you have accumulated as many dresses as this poor girl, you may have one or two gowns in your possession that you will never wear again, but which you would feel guilty throwing away. Why not turn one or all of them into costumes for your kids? A silk taffeta nightmare of a dress can be made into a beautiful ball gown for your little princess. I took a lovely blue dress (puffed sleeves, sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice - really, when was I ever going to wear that again?) and turned it into Cinderella's ball gown. A trip to the store provided a wand and tiara to match and some clear plastic sandals stood in for the glass slippers.

Another lovely handmade dress, this one yellow with lace trim, became Belle's gown from Beauty and the Beast. The same pattern worked for both dresses, with a few minor adjustments; the wand and tiara were still intact, and even the shoes still fit. Two unique, one of a kind Halloween costumes courtesy of two unused dresses hanging in my closet. And, not only did they work for Halloween, they were in constant use throughout the year by my daughter and her friends whenever they played dress-up.

Got little boys instead of little girls? How about turning that black satin number into Batman's cape or a red dress into Superman's cape? Superheroes are big on capes you know. The point is to be creative, have some fun and recycle that dress. You'll be glad you did.

Its important to know that germs are lurking everywhere including in the gym and these bacteria can cause dermatitis, conjunctivitis, verrucas, athletes foot and other skin rashes. You can get these irritations from various parts of the gym swimming pool, changing rooms, exercise machines, sauna and steam rooms.

There are three types of germs that can breed on even the cleanest floors and walls. These are the fungi which causes athletes foot, viruses which are responsible for colds and flu and bacteria which causes skin infections and stomach upsets. They can be present in the gyms changing rooms so check out if the rooms are cleaned several times a day, if there is grime existing in the corners especially the part where the wall meets the floor and if they have handwash and trash bins which should be emptied as often as possible. Its best, therefore, to use rubber slippers or flip-flops when using the changing room as well as the showers and sauna and steam rooms.

In the swimming pool, some micro-organisms are always present which can be eliminated by chemical disinfectant and filtration. But if the chlorine used is either too little or too many, infections can happen. If gym users do not follow the shower before swimming rule, the pool can also become contaminated. Another possible problem is when the pool has too many bathers making the chlorine level insufficient. Check then that the pool has clear and bright water with a mild scent of chlorine, has drainage grills on the surface of the water, clean walls and the frequency of water treatment.

The gym is definitely a breeding ground for germs what with a hot and sweaty atmosphere. The sharing of unclean mats and exercise equipment also adds to the problem. For your safety then, make sure that you get a thorough briefing on proper operating procedures before using the gym equipment. Clean towels or paper towels should be provided to wipe the equipment before and after every use, the gym is cleaned regularly, a first-aid kit is on display, and staff members practice wiping down machines and weights. Check also that a drinking fountain is available as it is required by law and that theres enough space in between machines for ease of movement. Be responsible enough as well to wipe any equipment before using it.
